Maintenance Agreements


Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA)

  • Pay an annual fee equal approximately 18% of the current suggested retail price of the product you purchased.*
  • Install as few or as many version updates as you like, all for free.
  • No need to worry about the “End of Update Discounts” deadline.

Automation and Enterprise Automation users are required to be using the most current version of BarTender in order to add additional printer licenses.  

Point Release Update – Usually occur every 5 to 9 months, and addresses reported bugs and software optimization. IE: 10.0 to 10.1

Full Version Update – Usually occurs every 8 to 14 months and coincides with major Windows releases. Full version updates include significant changes to the software.  Users who upgrade to the most current Windows OS need to upgrade BarTender to ensure full compatibility.  IE: 9.4 to 10.0


Factors to Consider:

There are a number of factors which need to be taken into account when deciding whether or not to keep the BarTender current and/or purchase an SMA;

Whether your company is using a workstation edition (Basic or Professional), or network edition (Automation or Enterprise Automation) of BarTender.   The cost to upgrade is much more costly for the network versions which means the SMA is a great value when compared to the cost of upgrading your network version of BarTender.

If the BarTender is integrated within another application to print labels, or if it’s being used as a stand-alone printing application.  Users utilizing a Seagull Scientific companion utility such as The Commander or are using Integration Tools should keep their BarTender running on the current version in order to ensure their system remains operational.  Windows and database updates can adversely affect users who are not on the current version.

Projected needs of your company – In order to add printer licenses to a network version, the user must have the current version of BarTender installed.  For example, if your company purchased the Automation Version with a 3 printers to launch a new compliance initiative and within 4 years needs to add additional printer licenses, the first step needed is to upgrade to the current version of BarTender.  The cost of this upgrade will be more than purchasing an SMA at the time of purchase.

If your company intends on upgrading to the current version of Windows – Many companies have an IT Strategy which includes upgrading Windows within their organization on a specific time table.  For companies who are upgrading their version of Windows every 4 years, or less would benefit by purchasing annual SMA’s.
