With less than 18 months until the 2027 Sunrise Date for GS1 Digital Link adoption, many retailers and manufactures are now strategizing on 2D barcode implementation. The interim adoption mandates that both an existing linear barcode (UPC/EAN) and specially formatted 2D (QR code) be included on packages, while retailers across all categories updates their scanning environments.
It is imperative that this new migration does not negatively impact point-of-sale scanning. There are numerous aspects of the Digital Link implementation that can adversely effect both checkout scanning and consumer experiences. Consequently, it is critical for retailers to establish standards based testing protocol for their supplier communities.
Bar Code Graphics has recently released a new whitepaper explaining this new product identification evolution and illuminates the potential risks facing both retailers and suppliers.
